The Art of Self-Care

Do you feel like your self-care routine constantly gets pushed to the bottom of the list? Then before you know it, you’re feeling overwhelmed because you feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. I must admit, sometimes I feel this way too. We have work, family obligations, social engagements, and much more that take priority over our self-care. Yes, all of these things hold importance, BUT we matter too. We need to be able to take care of our well-being so that we can give ourselves the opportunity to be fulfilled on a holistic level.

How do we begin to prioritize our self-care?

  • Identify Mental Blocks

We need to figure out how we think about self-care and what thoughts are directing our behaviours. Here are few prompting questions to help you explore!

What are you thoughts surrounding self-care?

Do you think you need to earn self-care?

Are you still figuring out what self-care means to you?

What beliefs are keeping you from prioritizing self-care?

Work on reframing your thoughts and instilling beliefs that promote self-care. e.g, catching yourself when opposing beliefs arise

I DON’T HAVE time becomes I MAKE time.

  • Identify Obstacles

We need to examine whats getting in the way of us attending to our well-being. Think back to a time when you planned for self-care. What got in the way and how will you prevent that from happening in the future?

  • Plan + Schedule

Now that you have an idea about your mindset and potential obstacles. You are able to put systems in place that’ll help you prioritize your self-care. Follow these simple steps!

    1. Brainstorm self-care activities/rituals (it’s super important that you choose things that nourish you!)

    2. Choose a day(s)

    3. Choose a time (morning, daytime, evening)

Give yourself grace when you’re implementing self-care into your routine. You may stumble upon a few road blocks, but the important part is that you’re making effort and fine-tuning as you go. If 60 minutes becomes 30 minutes, roll with it! At least you’re doing it and next time shoot for the original 60 minutes. Always remember, that you deserve all the love and nourishment that you give to others.
